Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 113: Ranting, Ranting, Ranted…

Yeah there’s only two of us, big whoop, wanna fight about it? Nah, I didn’t think so. Neither did we. We just want to talk toys and talk toys we do. And we talk about our childhoods, ex-girlfriends, movies we’ve seen and even politics. Okay, I really don’t remember everything we talked about and no it wasn’t because of the shots. It’s more because we go down countless rabbit holes, but in a good way. The way that makes you realize there is always more to learn. So open your mind, your hearts and your ears and take a big fat listen.

Listen while we discuss the heart wrenching, soul crushing price of Masterpiece Megatron. Listen while I try to reference the case assortment for the next wave of Black Series that wasn’t posted until after we reorded the show. Listen while we hem and haw over the new Super7 MOTU offerings. Finally, listen to me explain why we got probably the best Joe news since Joecon.

Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 112: Empathy, Sympathy…

It’s a historical night, for good or bad. We are really close to knowing whether a misogynistic racist or a lying political insider will be the next most powerful person in the free world. I’m human, I take sides, however I always have empathy for the other side. I know how it feels to be completely baffled at someone else’s decision. No matter the outcome of tonight, what is important that we as a people, not just Americans, but as Earthlings, start to sympathize with and practice empathy in regard to those we may not see eye to eye with. Maybe then we can finally start really listening to one another and truly progressing.

Speaking of listening, thanks for listening to us talk about a lot of stuff that doesn’t really matter, but at least is fun. We probably spend way too much time talking about this Asian exclusive mace for MP32 Optimus Primal and not nearly enough time about the new Joe-esque Kickstarter, Hell Screamerz. We definitely talk too much about these goofy MOTU Dorbz and definitely not enough time on the latest LucasFilm’s art exhibit, The Power of Costume.

All we are saying, is give empathy a chance…Slick

Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 111: The Cool Table…

One of my favorite shows just put out a special episode where they used the term “the cool table” to describe an inner circle. Crazy thing is most of them started on other shows, but they didn’t feel like part of those cool tables. I’m sure all of us have felt what it’s like to be on the outside looking in at one time or another. Hopefully at least a few times you’ve felt like you’re at the cool table. It can happen at work, school or even online. I think that can be a pretty big draw to collecting. Finding that hard to find toy, having a ridiculous level of knowledge about an obscure line, or even trolling. They can all make you not only feel like you’re part of something bigger than yourself and in some instances can lead to a higher echelon of belonging. The main thing to remember is be yourself. If for some reason other people don’t want you at their table, start your own.

Just like these guys. TFCon has really carved a niche in the Transformers world by catering to 3rd Party with a dedicated panel, and we talk about most of it. At the other end of spectrum, the new kid on the block just happens to have the biggest table of them all and they’re inviting you to kick it with them at Hascon 2017. At yet another con, Mondo’s showed off new 1/6th Masters which will most definitely become a cool table thing. Meanwhile, Hasbro looks like they are going to kick out a huge part of their Star Wars collecting inner circle in lieu of better margins.

Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 110: The Shit Show…

I was listening to NPR the other day and they had an author on there that wrote a book called All That Man Is. Before the interviewer even had the chance to lob the softball of a question about the title, I knew he was being clever and it had a dual meaning. It has the glass half empty connotation of this is all that man will ever be. However, to those of us that choose to be a little more optimistic it can represent the grandeur of what us as a people have achieved. Even people closest to me have no idea how rough life has been lately. If you ask me how’s it going, I’ll say “Good, how about you?” Some would say I’m in denial. I say I’m being optimistic. Life won’t always be this way, it will get better. At least I hope so and sometimes hope is enough. Now back to our title, do you see the dual meaning?

If you don’t, it means this show is the shit. We had a great time and I needed it. All of us are here talking NYCC, including the Super7 MOTUC reveals. While NYCC had some official reveals, a con none of us know the name of had the best Transformers reveals. Of course Star Wars had what is now becoming their standard panel, but at least we get some cool pics. And while Joe may never have another panel at a big con again, at least the 2 and 3-packs are hitting.

Life is half full…Slick

Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 109: Looking for the perfect episode…

So you say you’re looking for the perfect episode? Well I mentioned it briefly in the past, but I think we do have a pretty amazing solution. Even on longer episodes like this we are done with all of the toy news by two hours. So if that is your thing, boom, listen to the second break. If you want to listen to what we got, listener questions and non-toy news, then stay for the rest. It really is a perfect way to listen if I do say so myself. It’s an ideal by-product of our ranting and you get more of a natural show as opposed to me constantly monitoring every minute.

As you can tell by now, we got another long one for you mofos. As Vern can attest to there’s not a lotta Masters and even less Joe news. What we do have is Transformers and of course, with Force Friday coming, a metric shit ton of Star Wars stuff. Target put up its answer to Amazon’s page and now with coupons from their ad or online code “FORCE” you can get $10 off $50 or $25 off $100. A new possible MP Megatron shows up and people lose their shit. What’s funny is the biggest MOTU news wasn’t even Masters and wasn’t even news. Unsurprisingly the Classics Lion-O sold out in a couple minutes. Again, as with Masters, the best Joe news wasn’t even Joe. And it was only loosely related to Joe.

Well here’s a perfect beat, I mean episode, for ya…Slick

Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 108: Misrepresenting the truth…

Have you ever lied? I think that is like asking have you ever breathed. Can anyone honestly say they have never lied or even say they haven’t lied in the last month? There’s lotsa different lies people tell. The nice ones like how somebody looks in something, cover ups that ensure we or the ones we love, like or want to empress see the best possible outcome and those broad stroke “white” ones that don’t fall into either of those categories, but still cause little to no harm. The two you have to look out for are deceit and even more importantly, lying to yourself. Both are destructive and both can cause irreparable harm to not only ourselves, but the people around us. While I don’t think society is ready for people that don’t lie, the next time you feel the need ask yourself if it’s really necessary. Even more so if those lies are damaging your life.

On a brighter note, TOYS! That’s right, toys, bringing kids and grown men joy for decades. This time around Rogue One stuff goes off. Speaking of going off that is what you literally need to do to play Tappers of Grayskull. In contrast to the two previous, Titans Return news hits with “quality” over quantity. And with exactly two news stories, Joe is neither (insert Price is Right “you lost” sound here).

Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 107: Humble Pie…

If you didn’t know, I’m the "technical one" on the show. I always have been. Anytime something has gone wrong I try to figure out what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again. In almost 90 episodes with Mrs. McFavorite I had a relatively good track record with only a couple lost shows/segments and just a couple "technical difficulties". I primarily attribute that to local recordings. Well in only 15 episodes with the new remote team we have lost one show, almost lost another, we’ve had to rerecord a couple segments and now this week’s kerfuffle. In playing with my new headset, I somehow turned on an echo. The guys couldn’t hear it and when I listened to the test recording everyone sounded great. In hind sight I must not have waited to hear me talk or I would have caught it. Well there’s another one for the list, ensure ALL hosts sound good on the test recording.

What’s worse than a bad recording? It happening on a great show or at least one we had a blast recording. Roger is back and so is Masterpiece Soundwave . Also back is the Lego Death Star , bigger and better than ever. Well at least more expensive than ever. Speaking of expensive, the Joe Club is back with it next installment of its FSS series . Are you in for a Shattered Glass twin(s)? Something that may be back and Vern is still not in is Power-Con . Boo this man.

Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 106: Together Everyone Achieves More…

Last time we talked about doing shit. Well no matter how much stuff you can get done it doesn’t compare to working with a team. However, that team only works if everyone pulls their weight. There’s nothing worse than when you depend on people and they drop the ball. At least when it’s just you, you only have yourself to blame. You’re able to control what does and does not get done. The most frustrating thing about a team, is you never know who’s going to show up, physically or metaphorically. People are going to do them, good or bad, and that’s all there is to it.

This show is dominated by SDCC. We know that was almost a month ago, but hey, when have we ever been timely. For Transformers, the little Gnaw was the belle of the ball. For Masters the big news is Classics being taken over by Super7. Pixel Dan gets the scoop on what this means. For Joe at least there were some display cases. For Star Wars it wasn’t much better, but at least we get some cool Black Series 6″ stuff.

Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 105: Busy, busy, busy…

It is definitely that time of year. There is just crazy amounts of stuff going on, work, the show, cons, Lil’ Miss McFavorite, wife and life. I gotta say, I am killing it. However, it still seems like I’m not getting anything done. Do you know how good it feels to get things done? It’s amazing, but if you constantly worry about the things you’re not getting done, it can rob you of truly enjoying your accomplishments. Once you can appreciate that you only have so much time, the next thing you have to watch out for is poor prioritization. If you do all the piddly shit first you will never get to the tasks of substance that really affect your life. Do yourself a favor, give yourself a break and then kick your ass into gear. Don’t leave this life wishing you had more time, celebrate that you did as much as you could with the time you had.

We managed to shave some time off this show. While it’s still 2 and a half hours, that’s primarily because we just had an onslaught of SDCC news. The show was actually recorded in two parts due to some technical issues and the Comic-Con stuff is the first 45 minutes. It will probably take up even more time on the next show as we discuss all the news from SDCC. One thing it looks like we won’t know too much about is MOTUC. For the first time since the line started in 2009 there is not a panel this year. On the other extreme, Transformers has 3 panels, but none of them seem like toy panels. At least Star Wars still gets a toy panel, but even cooler than that are their exclusives this year. And for Joe, well, at least we’re getting an exclusive.

Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 104: Back at it again with the long shows…

Yeah, I know. It’s almost comical at this point. At least Mrs. McFavorite gets a kick out of it. Almost three and a half hours again. Unfortunately we lost the original 104, it was only 2 hours, I swear. It might be the for best as I was a little salty that night. So this is more like 104 and 105 with a much happier Slick with a special guest appearance by Lil’ Miss McFavorite. I promise you they will be shorter. However, it’s my day off and I’m being lazy. Bitching about show length is a great way to not have to get all deep and shit.

In this marathon we talk about some amazing toy stuff, we get a little offensive, but most importantly we have lotsa fun. I cover my experiences attending Power-Con and Joecon. Spoiler, they were unreal and I had an absolutely amazing time at both. News-wise the gang all agrees this MP Inferno is the pooh, take a big whiff. Other things we all pretty much agree on are all the new fictions coming out for every brand. Rogue One = yay, Last Knight = nay, Masters = about time, and Hasbro Cinematic / Revolution = meh.
