Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 085: TOY FAIR 2013!…

Timely as usual. Here’s our Toy Fair coverage only a few weeks after the fact. You’ve heard everyone else chime in. You may have even heard some of our thoughts on Dave and Devall’s show, but now hear our opinions unedited, unmoderated and on our own show. This is one my favorite shows of the year. As usual we had some amazing announcements this year.

Mattel prematurely blew their load involuntarily and in those leaks was one of my favorite things from show. It is perhaps one of my favorite figures from the entire line in his best homage yet. While most of the G.I. Joe toys had already been shown, we did get this treat. No matter how many versions of this figure we see, every time he just gets better and better. Transformers had my best of show yet again. No it wasn’t the largest Transformer to date; it was one of my favorite characters from the ‘86 movie. Finally Hasbro rocked the community with its announcement of a new Star Wars 6″ line. Black Series is possibly the “crossover” that may save the Star Wars line. Only time will tell.

Wow! What were y’all trying to do make me cry at work? Oi veigh! Anyway I feel you on needing to back on up and regain perspective. Good luck adjusting to parenthood and I hope your dream of owning a toy store can still come true in the future. At the very least you should at least be able to run a lucrative eBay buisness and perhaps be a table dealer of ill repute at the occasional local con. Mrs McFavw could be a booth babe and you could be a cranky Bernie Mac esc salesman ala TF1 lol:). Anyway I subscribe via stitcher on the Ol iPhone so even if ya pop up twice a year, I,ll be tuned in. Stay cool, rock on, & thanks for all the blood, beer sweat, and tears. I love your faces even though I never even seen them. Peace;)

As a long time listener from the UK i want to pass on my sincere thanks for making my long commute to work that bit easier by listening to your entertaining show. As time has gone on i feel i have really got to know you both and the reason why i listened and will look forward to more podcasts is because of YOU GUYS not the toys. In fact you could record 3 hours of anything and i am subscribed! Good luck with everything and wish you both well for the future

Yeah it was tough one for me too. My problem with selling toys is the margins are non-existent unless you’re doing crazy volume or scalping. I definitely gained a greater appreciation for how BBTS has to price things. Who know, maybe some day when I don’t have to make money. Thanks for listening all these years.

    @Capt Scott
Thanks Scott, that was our intention all along. Toys just happen to be what I like the most. We are big believers in family and that’s what we wanted to create. We will back, hopefully with a few hundred less toys and few thousand more bucks :)

A grown man teary eyed at work :) That doesn’t happen very often. But thanks for all the great podcasts. Thank you both for opening up so much to all of us podcast listeners. You two are great. Take as much time off from podcasting as you need. And when you come back I know you’ll be better than ever. Life is too short so enjoy it as much as you can.

    Dear Jason & Jesica,

I was very move from the speech at the end of the show. At the same time, I’m reflecting on what I need to do with my life as well. Thanks for the wake up call (as an obsess collector such as I). This hobby needs to turn from obsession to simply back to just a “hobby.” Thank you for giving us hours of entertainment. You both hold a special place in my heart. If I ever meet the both of you in person at one of these conventions, I demand you let me take the both of you out for dinner. You both are such wonderful people and I wish you nothing but the very best!

Hi Jason, having a toy store is an amazing goal but in the meantime; start selling some of your stuff on Ebay. Here is a philosophy I “try” following, if you need to buy something; sell something greater or equal that amount in price or size. This is a tough concept at first and it takes practice. I don’t always follow my philosophy but I try very hard to keep my addiction in check and with your wake up call… I’m definitely needed to follow the same path as you. Together, we will have only the definitive collectibles and with much available free space around the house.

Hi Jesica, the both of you took the show to a level 10+! You’re so funny especially and your radio personality really shines (plus having an amazing voice is a big plus). If the both of you like to do a show other then toy talk, I’m definitely be the first one subscribing. Thank you Jesica for everything… You know I’m going to expect a hug if I never meet you. Thank you for being my friend and I look forward to your returns.

Hi LittleMcFavorite, be a good girl and chew on these twister instead of those cords. Oh and here, play with Daddy’s Fort Max and stay out of trouble. XD

To the perfect couple that touches many hearts of others. I’m giving this show my Triple E rating of Extraordinary Entertainment of Excellence!

    God Speed,

We’ve been getting a lot of that. Wasn’t our intention, but both of us were right there with you. We already can’t wait for our triumphant return :)

That might be a possibility. Maybe once I get some sales under my belt.

That’s a great philosphy. Definitely something to shoot for. My problem is I love all the different versions of a character, so a definitive version would never work me. Thanks for being so active with cast.

We’ll see you guys sooner rather than later.

Wow. Many times I listen to your shows a chunk at a time due to their length and also to stretch it out between uploads. So I only just got to the end :(
I applaud you for taking a stand as a man and doing what is best for your family. It felt like a cleansing and honest statement and I wish you the best going forward.
A few years ago I was close to that point, I unloaded a huge amount of stuff. I used to have over 1000 transformers!
Since then I (at least try) get rid of something when I buy something and the hobby regained the fun, light feel it should have. Not to mention how fun it is to play with the kids now that my daughter (4 & 1/2) is old enough to appreciate and not just break them :)
I’ll really miss the podcast. No lie it’s my favorite listen. Selfishly I want you to continue, but that’s all that is, selfishness. You’re doing the right thing.
You mention podcasters with kids, I don’t do a podcast but I do have 3 kids and a wife. For what it’s worth, the first kid makes you upend your life and seems prohibitive to extracurricular activities, but after a while you find a new rythym. Here’s hoping :)
Anyway, if OYT is something you want to continue you will find a way. If not…thank you so much for the entertainment, and if threre’s ever ANYTHING I can do, let me know :)
    Best wishes,

    Thanks Dan!

I figured if anyone knew what we were going through you would. We’re just trying to find that balance. AAA has your same philosophy. I don’t know if I can ever do a one to one, but I’ve got about 30 items up on the Bay in the last month. So at least I’m making some progress.

Love this statement: “the hobby regained the fun, light feel it should have”

That’s what I need. It’s already coming back as I ship things out, make space and pay down debt.

SPOILER: We’ve been approved for Press for our local con here in less than a month. It won’t be a standard OYTC, but we will put out show about our experience.

We’ll see you sooner rather than later…Slick
