Open Your Toys Cast - Episode 024 (Part 1): That’s a whole lotta questions, answers too.

That’s right; we’re back with another two-parter. We talked so damn much that we once again broke it up into two long ass shows. It’s okay though, because our next episode is our one year anniversary. Not the Mrs. and I, but us and you. Can you believe it, a year of mediocre toy news coverage, tangents and untimely releases? Why should this one be any different?

OYTC’s official anniversary was October 7th. However, we’ll be recording our anniversary show this weekend. Don’t get me wrong, we are so proud to still be here. I think I heard once that most podcasts don’t last more than six episodes. Only six? Really? We’ve got at least four times that. Granted, it took us a year, but we still love what we do and hope you do too. Can’t wait to get back to our regular format. There has been a lot of amazing toy news.

For now, enjoy all the Q&A (.pdf) goodness. There’s interesting tidbits (yeah I said tidbits, big whoop, wanna fight about it) for every franchise. Unfortunately Masters of the Universe and G.I. Joe come up a little light. Towards the end McLovin makes a comeback and we have a real life virgin join us. Hear this first-time podcast guest/host’s take on our my obsession.

Alright, 3 minutes in and I had to run over here and comment. See, I really like toys, mostly transformers. However, the thing I do is collect comics. Damn, I love comics and hearing the Green Lantern groove, was awesome. I love the OYTC, its my all time fav. so I figure that Slick needs to do a one off special. A “Read Your Comics Cast.” My wife compares my comics habit to a smoker, I need that fix, so hopefully your start with GL and move on to Flash, Batgirl, Spider-man and the whole bit.

    Peace and Love,
    mike b.

@TaterX: Thanks, that means a lot.

@jaime: Thanks Jaime. The dogs are always welcome so long as Mrs. McFavorite pays attention. If you haven’t noticed, she’s not much of a multi-tasker.

@Mike Burns: My goal is to make it through some of the franchises. I mean both Transformers and G.I. Joe original runs are well over a hundred. That doesn’t even include everything since. Have you read any of them? How would you compare them to classics like Spider-man, etc’?

Again thanks to all of you for listening. It means so much that you enjoy what we do. We love hearing from you guys!

I have read tons of Transformers and Joes comics. Seems like GIJOE always had better comics, especially in the Marvel years. It even seems now, with me limited contact with the new comics, IDW is telling better Joe stories then the All Hail Megatron series. I have read some spotlights that weren’t bad but…

I think that the comics writers of these franchises get there hands a little tied do to the nature of the property. I for one, would love to see the autobots fighting someone else other then Decepticons. It’s a big universe out there and everything doesn’t transform.

As far as comparing Joes and Formers to things like Spidey or Green Lantern, the biggest difference is just depth and character development. Marvel and DC stuff tend to focus on developing a few characters while the toy comics have to cram in as many cameos as possible with very little character development.

@Mike Burns: After all I heard about All Hail Megatron, didn’t even try it. I am loving all the IDW Joe stuff. The TF movie books weren’t bad either. I know what you’re saying in regard to getting locked into the franchise and character development. I think it stems from the old animation adage that appearances sell toys. The more characters the better for Hasbro.

@Saber: Thanks man. Miss your longly postlies.

@jaime: Mama always said lame is as lame does. (See, now I put something even more lame to overshadow yours, hahaha)

Ep. 24 was perhaps my favorite. The Hasbro official word on the Fallen and infinite timelines was priceless. I kinda want that on a t-shirt, very small writing and obviously two-sided. Plus, I haven’t collected Star wars in years, but never got a Y-wing, even though I always loved it. Was excited by the Q&A regarding the 2010 one.
